Welcome to Vail Ski Rentals

January 22, 2009

vail Welcome to Vail Ski RentalsThe Vail Ski Resort is located in Eagle County, Colorado next to the town of Vail. Vail Mountain, at 5,289 acres (21.40 km2), is the largest single mountain ski resort in The United States, featuring seven bowls and intermediate gladed terrain in Blue Sky Basin. It opened in 1962 and is currently owned and operated by Vail Resorts, which also operates three other ski resorts in the state, Breckenridge, Keystone, and the nearby Beaver Creek.

Vail Mountain

Vail boasts three distinct areas of the mountain, each with their own features and fortes, including three terrain parks, seven bowls and 5,289 acres of freeride terrain. At seven miles wide, finding fresh tracks is as easy as finding elbow room. In fact, on an average day, there are only two skiers per acre, and on a busy day, only four! Take an interactive tour of the mountain to really get a feel for the largest ski resort in the U.S.

Coveted as North America’s top ski resort, Vail is an extraordinary winter vacation. Last year, thirty-eight feet of powder blanketed Vail’s seven Back Bowls. With blue sky three hundred days a year and the most groomed terrain, families celebrate here. The experience is world class, from Snow Sports School to activities, entertainment and accommodations. Vail – Like Nothing on Earth.

Vail, Colorado has gone from humble beginnings to become one of the leading ski destinations in the world. With 5,200 acres of amazing mountain terrain and the surrounding villages of Bachelor Gulch, Arrowhead, East Vail and Avon, there is enough skiing and lodging to ensure an amazing mountain vacation experience. Regardless of the season, Vail Colorado has something to offer everyone. From winter’s array of on-the-snow activities, to summer’s selection of biking, hiking, and water sports, Vail has it all.

What if I pay for four days of Vail skiing, but I decide to snowboard the last two days?

No problem, bring in your ski rental equipment and we’ll set you up on a snowboard!

Yes, yes. We have new ski rental equipment every year and we tune our rental skis and snowboards for each rental. We check all ski rentals and snowboard rentals and make sure our ski rental equipment is tuned.

Is tuned equipment important? Does it make you go too fast?

Yes, tuned equipment is important. You wouldn’t rent a car with bald tires, would you? Untuned skis are like bald tires…you have no control and it is dangerous. Tuned skis offer you control and they do not make you go too fast because when you go faster than you like, just turn. A tuned ski lets you turn easier and smoother.

History

Vail was founded by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton in 1962, between the town of Eagle, Colorado and Vail Pass, which was named after Charles Vail, designer of the highway that passed through the valley. Seibert joined the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division during World War II, which trained at Camp Hale, just southeast of Vail. During Seiberts’ and Eatons’ time with the 10th, they trained at several resorts around the Vail area, such as Loveland, Keystone and Aspen. While roaming the area mountains, Seibert and Eaton discovered a peak that had the perfect location and base area for a resort, they named this peak “No-name Mountain”, but it would eventually become Vail. Construction of the Vail resort began in 1962 in a valley devoid of civilization. It opened just 6 months later on December 15th. There were 3 lifts upon opening, one gondola that ran from the frontside base to the peak, a lift from mid-mountain to the peak, and a lift that brought skiers back up from the back bowls.

In 1982, Vail had another chance to be the center of attention of the international skiing community when it hosted, to incredible hype and success, the Alpine Skiing World Cup. The Cup was held in Vail again a decade later, to even bigger fanfare.

Vail has recently been declared the #1 Ski resort in the US.  It has been awarded this honor 14 times over the last 17 years.

Vail’s own Lindsey Vonn won her 39th career world cup on Sunday. At Cortina d’Empezzo, which lies in the Dolomites of the Italian Alps, Vonn was .05 seconds faster than the German Maria Riesch. With such a dominating performance, one must look at her origin. Vail is loaded with ski rental shops and tons of good restaurants, shops and hotels. Visit a Vail Ski Shop and get on the slopes with the spirit of Vonn at your back.

People from all over the world travel to the Vail Valley for vacation. It’s somewhat unique that there are two world class ski resorts, Vail and Beaver Creek, within 10 miles of each other. And I’m lucky enough to live in the area. With a season pass in hand, I have unlimited access, free of charge, to both mountains. It’s almost like living in a bubble. The local economy relies on visitors. Vail ski shops, Vail ski rentals, restaurants, etc do most of their business with out of town visitors. Without the mountains, the area would be completely different. Coming from NYC, it’s such a welcome change of pace and lifestyle.

Flying in the Vail Valley

February 4, 2010

When visiting the Vail Valley, you basically have two choices in terms of airports. One, you can use Denver, which is around a 2 hr drive. The other option is the Eagle/Vail airport, which is about 30 minutes from Vail. The Denver airport typically has much cheaper fares. It also gives you a time buffer to line up Vail ski rentals, lodging or anything else. On the downside, if the weather is inclement, the drive can be very slow going. Personally, I like to travel from the Eagle/Vail airport. It has free parking and its easily accessible from anywhere in the Valley. They also have direct flights to NYC, which is my most likely destination. While it can be more expensive then Denver, you save on parking and also on transportation to your destination. Fly into Eagle, get your Vail ski rentals delivered, and make your visit that much more enjoyable.

Rossignol Customer Service

February 2, 2010

I do not own skis. I’ve been using Vail ski rentals for the entire winter and will likely continue to do so for its duration. But I do own a pair of Rossignol ski boots that I purchased at the beginning of this winter. It’s great owning your own boots. You get a customized fit which making skiing more enjoyable, and you get slight discounts on your Vail ski rentals. With around 25 days of skiing on my new boots, some rivets popped off. I was pretty disappointed, so I sent them to Utah from Vail to have them serviced by Rossignol. In less than a week, I received a new pair of boots from Rossi, free of charge. Great customer service! I couldn’t be happier with it. I will continue to use and recommend Rossi.

Lindsey Vonn

January 26, 2010

Lindsey Vonn, from Vail, is making a strong push moving into the winter Olympics. She is more or less crushing the competition in downhill ski events leading up the Vancouver. Although I didn’t grow up in Vail, it’s exciting for the town. It’s not like they need more press, but it’s always nice to see a hometown person doing well, especially on a national stage. It’s weird to think she grew up here using Vail ski rentals and shopping in Vail ski shops, but for her, it was simply her childhood.

Vail’s European Focus

January 24, 2010

With the US economy still on somewhat shaky terms, Vail’s marketing team has applied a focus to western European markets. The exchange rate between the euro and the dollar still strongly favors the euro, so Europeans can vacation in the Valley for a fraction of the cost of a US traveler. Their Vail ski rentals, their purchases in Vail ski shops, and their restaurant outings all come at a highly discounted price. Vail gets their revenue, the Europeans get an awesome ski vacation. I guess everyone wins.

Snow Snow Snow

January 22, 2010

With a relative lack of snow the last couple weeks, the snow report is looking much better. 1 inch last night, 5 inches Tuesday night, and more coming today and through the weekend. Every inch helps. Maybe consider upgrading your Vail ski rentals to a fatter ski more suitable for some powder. Just don’t jinx it! With ski technology changing so quickly, renting provides the opportunity to have a ski specifically for the current conditions. Browse the Vail ski shops, or hire a delivery service. Either way, get on a ski that will optimize your performance.

Importance of Boot Fit

January 10, 2010

As far as I’m concerned, there is nothing more important when skiing than the fit of your boots. Of course its nice when the Vail ski shops offer nice boots, but really the fit is most crucial. It needs to be tight to ensure proper control of the skis. It is really scary when your ski moves without your foot moving. That means you have limited control and results in a dangerous situation. Ideally, any time you foot moves, the ski should move accordingly. So during your next Vail ski rental, pay most attention to the boot fit as it can make or break your day.
